Dog's death a mistake that should have been avoided

Published: Friday, November 25, 2005 8:35 AM EST
Dear Editor, My daughter had a beautiful Australian shepherd mix. He was 18 months old. She bought him when he was 6 weeks old. At the time, I lived in her home so I carried the dog home in my arms. We immediately bonded. We named him "Russo." He was so smart. He loved to play. He liked to be loved on. And he was protective of his territory.

My son-in-law did not like the dog. Several ads were run to find him a new home. My daughter is in school full time. I had moved into an apartment where I'm not allowed a dog, especially a large one. And "Russo" didn't get a lot of attention.

My daughter decided to take him to the Humane Society and let him find a home. She really did not want to do this. We loved him. She was told "We will hold him 24 hours before we put him in with the other animals. You might change your mind and come back to get him." This was at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. On Thursday my daughter called to check on him and was told "He is not eating." She got upset and decided to go get him. I was with her. We arrived at 1 p.m. and were told "He was put to sleep this morning." We were shocked. How could this happen?

Our "Russo" was gone. He was not even given a chance to find a new home. On Friday, after she calmed down, my daughter called to find out what happened and she was told it was a mistake. This was not a humane act. It was wrong. They killed our dog. He was part of our family. We are very sad and I am very mad.
