Get a contract for every home improvement project
Dear Editor, Thanks to the recent writer alerting us to scams in the home improvement area.
I hired a painter earlier this year who unfortunately did not finish the job as promised. Regardless of whether you find their name in the want ads or in the phone book like I did, always check them out and get a good contract listing all the details of the job, especially when money is to be paid and when the job is to be finished.
Don’t be swayed by the fact that he works for one of the big builders in town or is the best customer of a local paint store. He’s really self-employed, so when his local work dries up, he will most probably leave town quickly, owing them something also.
I took this painter to court, but because I did not have a detailed enough contract, my case was dismissed. So, buyer beware!
