A Maryland family is trying to recover this week after a violent van crash on Interstate 95.
Sean and Stephanie Garvey of Gambrills, Md., and their 10 children were traveling Dec. 16 to Florida when their Ford van crashed into the tree line near mile marker 12.
The couple's 5-week-old child died from injuries sustained in the crash. Preliminary reports indicate the child was in a car seat, according to a Camden County Sheriff's Office press release.
"The remaining 11 family members all received varying degrees of injury," the release states.
Ground ambulances took those with minor injuries to Camden Medical Center, while two air ambulances took the family members with serious injuries to Shands Hospital, Jacksonville.
However, Sgt. Neal Jump, commander of Georgia State Patrol's Brunswick post, said the decision was later made to take the whole family to Shands.
"Everyone did go to Shands so that they could keep the family together," Jump said.
Jump declined to comment on whether the children were wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred.
Personnel from the sheriff's office and Camden County Fire Rescue (CCFR) arrived first and reported a chaotic scene with multiple ejections from the van, the sheriff's office release states.
The accident remains under investigation by Georgia State Patrol.
