St. Marys Police Department investigators pulled the body of a young African-American woman from a trash bin behind The Pines Apartments on Wednesday.
Lt. Frank Thornal, public information officer for the department, said the woman, who he estimated was between the ages of 20 and 25, had not been identified, adding an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday by a Georgia Bureau of Investigation coroner.
"We sent [the body] to Savannah to the GBI crime lab," he said.
Thornal also said investigators have not yet determined the woman's cause of death, though it appears she did suffer a blow to the head. Thornal estimated she died sometime Tuesday evening. A check on the woman's fingerprints in Nassau County, Fla., came back negative for an identification, he said.
St. Marys investigators will continue to investigate the case after the autopsy results are in, Thornal said.
