Mrs. Root was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 7, 1924. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in marketing from Ohio State University and worked for several years as a buyer with Macy’s.
She and Allen L. Root were married in 1950. The couple lived in Deerfield, Ill., for most of their lives, and retired to St. Simons Island.
Mrs. Root was active in civic organizations and served as president of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago (Lake Forest/Deerfield Chapter) as well as holding offices in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Northeast Illinois. She taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, and worked in the administration office of School District 109 in Deerfield for 15 years. Kay enjoyed ballroom dancing, water skiing, cross-country skiing and tennis.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, and is survived by sons, Craig, Matthew and Jonathan; daughter, Michelle (McDaniel); sister, Clara (Blum); five grandchildren, Creighton, Ashley (Smith), Jameson, Blair and Elijah; and four great-grandchildren, Luke, Ashley, Kolbe and Katharine Marie (Smith).
A memorial service will be held in July in Eagle River, Wis.
