Doris Jean Strickland
Doris Jean Strickland
Mrs. Doris Jean Strickland, 83, of St. Marys passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the Senior Care Center in St. Marys, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Strickland was born on May 16, 1931, in Blackshear. She was the daughter of the late Ola Nettles Bryant Taylor and William Franklin Bryant.

She was a graduate of Patterson High School in 1948 and moved to Camden County in 1949. Mrs. Strickland was employed for more than 20 years as an inspector with Kraft Bag and with Gilman Paper Company.

Mrs. Strickland loved to work with her hands. She became an avid crafter, making dolls, crocheting and the like. She loved her flowers and grew them all year long. She always had a greenhouse for her plants, moving them in and out as the season warranted. She also was passionate about the Atlanta Braves and for many years she would have a season schedule printed out with the television lineup, so she would not miss watching a game. She loved fishing, whether catching them or just the simple joy of feeding them. Her warm heart and gentle touch will be missed by her family and friends alike.

Mrs. Strickland is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Farley Strickland; her beloved children, Roger Graw of St. Marys, Gene Graw of Shelbyville, Ky., Randy (Shannon) Strickland of Blackshear, Ronnie (Dawn) Strickland of Patterson and Ritchie (Jennifer) Strickland of Blackshear; her brother, Jones Bryant of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sisters, Sara (Herman) Moore of Blackshear and Joyce Brooks of Kingsland; her grandchildren, Josh (Kim) Graw of Kingsland, Amanda Graw of St. Marys, Shereen Hamby of Semmes, Ala., Amber (Daniel) Warner of Lufkin, Texas, Ashlye (Colby) Thrift of Patterson, and Hanna Strickland, Brent (Cassie) Strickland, Jacob Strickland and Abigail Strickland, all of Blackshear; and her great-grandchildren, Madelyn Graw, Christopher Hamby, Jealyn Warner, Ryder Thrift and Carson Hill.

Along with her parents, Mrs. Strickland joins her son, James Franklin “Frank” Graw, and her brother, David “Bud” Bryant, in Heaven.

Calling hours for Mrs. Strickland were from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the funeral home in Kingsland. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, in the Wainwright Chapel of the funeral home, with Bro. Archie Strickland presiding. Pallbearers were Josh Graw, Harold Brooks, Kyle Moore, Glavin Eakes, Ronnie Strickland and Brent Strickland. Interment followed the service at Laura Chapel Cemetery in Patterson.

The family requests any memorial donations be made in Mrs. Strickland’s honor to the Senior Care Center, 805 Dilworth St., St. Marys, Ga. 31558, or Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, Ga. 31525.
