Son of Dr. and Mrs. William Carroll of Luzerne, Pa., Noel graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served on the USS Damato for two years. He then returned home and attended Kings College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He later attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he received a master’s in education and a Ph.D. in education administration.
Dr. Carroll served in the Montgomery County, Md., school system for 30 years, first as an educator and later as an administrator. During this time, he also served as an adjunct professor for three different Washington, D.C. area universities. Upon retirement from Montgomery County Schools in 1984, Dr. Carroll relocated to Georgia to accept a position with the Camden County school system, opening first a new elementary and later a middle school. He then served as director of secondary education and media services.
Dr. Carroll retired for a second time from Camden County schools and shortly thereafter accepted a position in the English department of Georgia Military College at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base and as interim director of the college. Eleven years later, he came to Vidalia, where he accepted a position at Brewton Parker College as professor of education and director of off-campus education programs. Dr. Carroll retired at age 81, after 60 years of service in the field of education.
Noel was a loving husband of 56 years to Bennie Helen Carroll (née Parker), formerly of Moultrie, and a devoted father to three beloved children and their spouses: Chris and Mandy Carroll of Vidalia, Meg and Cole Calhoun of Kennesaw and Noelle and Jim Wilkerson of Columbia, S.C.
He was also a proud and adoring grandfather to John Carroll of Vidalia, Jordan and Jackson Calhoun of Kennesaw, and Ben, Peter, Hannah, Grace, Mary Leigh and Rose Wilkerson of Columbia, S.C.
Noel will be dearly missed by his two surviving brothers, Gene and Paul Carroll of Cleveland, Ohio, both of whom he loved and respected greatly.
He was preceded in death by two beloved sisters, Mary Pryor of Luzerne, Pa., and Ruth Alred of Winchester, Va., and his beloved brother, William Carroll of Fayetteville, N.C. He also loved his many nieces and nephews and treasured friends.
Noel was a lifelong Christian who expressed profound love for the Lord and sought always to help others realize and achieve their goals through education and fellowship.
