Hubert (Pop) Barber of Harrietts Bluff died peacefully at the St. Marys Senior Care Center on May 24, 2016. He was 87 years old.
Hubert was preceded in death by his wife, Iris C. Barber; and his son, Hubert Perry Barber.
He was survived by his daughter, Harritte Sirmon of White Oak; his grandsons, Lee Barber of Harrietts Bluff, Kevin Barber of Waynesville, Brian Barber of St. Marys, Nicky Barber of St. Marys and Jonathan Sirmon of White Oak; his granddaughter, Jamie Townsend of Jesup; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Hubert was born Aug. 1, 1928, in the Okefenokee swamp at the home of his grandfather, Obediah Barber. Hubert moved to Harrietts Bluff as a child with his parents, Perry Barber and Lizzy Barber. He was married to Iris on Aug. 15, 1950, until her death in February 1992.
Hubert worked for Cabin Bluff and Brunswick Pulp and Paper as a hunting guide for more than 36 years. He was also a sworn deputy sheriff for the Camden County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Willie Smith in the late 1960s and worked closely with the Department of Natural Resources throughout his life. Hubert was an avid hunter, fisherman, and shrimper.
A celebration of Hubert’s life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys. Private graveside services will be held at Colesburg Cemetery in Woodbine.
