Doris Fewox Beck, 84, of St. Marys passed away peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family on Monday, April 4, 2016.

Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Hoboken, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Linnie Strickland Griffin.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray Beck Jr.; four brothers, Theodore Griffin, P.Q. Griffin, Dempsey Griffin and Miller Griffin; and two sisters, Dorothy Davis O’Steen and Karen Griffin.

Doris could accomplish anything she set her mind to do. She became an accomplished seamstress — all self-taught — and used her talents to make beautiful draperies, men's suits and children's and women's clothing.

She became a licensed practical nurse in the 1970s. She said she became interested in nursing because she loved learning about new medical procedures and information. Above all, she enjoyed helping others.

Doris worked many years in various positions including in the emergency and operating rooms at Gilman Hospital in St. Marys. She later transferred to Southeast Georgia Medical Center in Brunswick where she worked in cardiac rehabilitation. While working for more than 20 years in the medical profession, she also was involved in various clubs in her residence of Camden County.

She loved her family and friends with a fierce devotion. Doris will be remembered as a true Southern lady, a steel magnolia, a woman with style and grace who always had a smile on her face and a follower of Jesus Christ. While she has left this earth, her homecoming in heaven is truly a comfort to those she has left behind. While we will miss our mother, sister, aunt and friend, her legacy of love will live on through the many family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Funeral services will be at at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at the First Baptist Church of St. Marys with Pastor Steve Kegley officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.

Survivors include four children, Pamela Kimes (Chuck), Brad Fewox (Sheila), Bryan Fewox (Susan), all of St. Marys and Paula Valliere (John) of Ashburn, Va.; four sisters, Joyce Britt and Cora Bell Dowling both of Nahunta, Cathryn Strickland (Donald) of Townsend and Wanda Hagin of Waycross; eight grandchildren, Hoss Hogan, Greg Hogan, Mindy Renee Williams, Nicholas Fewox, Jennifer Blount, Erica Rafferty, Connor Valliere and Ryan Valliere; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests contributions in memory of Mrs. Doris Fewox Beck be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.

Allison Memorial Chapel and Funeral Home of St. Marys is in charge of arrangements.
