Robert Lamar (Bob) Hooks, 71, of St. Marys (formerly) of Leeds and Scottsboro, Ala.) passed away Aug. 21, 2019.
A longtime resident of St. Marys, he had fallen in love with this part of the world and had made it his permanent home. Bob worked for more than 30 years as a Navy civilian education services officer at the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. An avid biker, he and his Harley made numerous trips, eventually visiting all the states in the continental U.S. His many friends were truly family he chose for himself.
In later years, he found great joy in his portrayal as the area’s own Santa and was an amazing doppelgänger for the jolly old fellow at the North Pole.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Hooks of Scottsboro, Ala., and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Campbell of Leeds, Ala., and daughter, Miriam.
He is survived by his son, Kevin Lamar Hooks and, daughter, Karen Hooks Jones; former wife, Brenda Hooks; grandsons, Chris and Alex Hurst, Cody (Zoe) Jones and great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Jones, all of Jeffersonville, Ind.; sister, Sonya (David) Miller; nephews, David (Tina) Miller and Bill Miller and great-nephew Keith Miller and great-niece, Saylor Miller, all of Leeds; stepbrothers, Larry (Nell) Champman of Decatur, Ala., and Ray (Martha) Chapman of Scottsboro and Jim (Cynthia) Campbell of Douglasville; stepsisters, Kay Chapman of Decatur and Kaye Campbell of Huntsville; many nieces and nephews; and dear friend Cindy Opdyke of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. Marys Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Marys Church and First Baptist Church of St. Marys.
