Mr. Bertram Michael “Bert” James, 71, of Waycross died Sunday afternoon, April 17, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Pierce County to the late Benjamin Matthew James and Leona Dubberly James. He was a graduate of the Pierce County High School class of 1964. After high school, he served in the United States Army and began a career in broadcasting. During those years he worked for WAPE in Jacksonville, Fla., WACL in Waycross and GPB TV in Atlanta.
It was in Jacksonville where he began his career with Underwoods Jewelers. Eventually Bert moved back to Waycross where he opened James Jewelers. For the past 40 years, he has owned and operated James Jewelers and James Engraving with locations in Waycross and St. Marys.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waycross. An avid boater, Mr. James loved spending time with his family and friends on the water.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, June Barnes James of Waycross; three children, Michael James and his fiancée April Kitchens of Waycross, April James McNeil and her husband John of St. Marys and Jeremy James of St. Marys; six grandchildren, Sarah Beth James, Ray Kitchens, Anderson McNeil, Harrison McNeil, Mary Margaret McNeil and Jack McNeil; a brother, Bennie James and his wife Jennell of Waycross; three sisters, Margaret Howell of Waycross, Margie Braddy and her husband Malcolm of Waycross and Mildred Howard of Waycross; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church. A private family burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home.
