Janie Marie Jenkins, 72, of St. Marys passed away on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.
She was born Feb. 27, 1945, to the late Delmon Washington Sr. and Sarah Campbell-Washington in Brunswick. Janie received her education at Ralph J. Bunche High School and graduated in the class of 1963. She was a former member of Greater Trinity Methodist Church in St. Marys and in the late 1970s she became a member of Wheeler Street Church of God where she served faithfully as an usher and mother of the church.
Janie enjoyed sewing, reading poems, collecting bells, and spending time with her family. Her employment history includes Kraft Bag Plant in St. Marys, from which she retired after 24 years of service, the Child Development Center in Kings Bay and the local Walmart.
Janie was preceded in death by three brothers, Delmon Washington Jr., Melvin Washington and Steve Campbell; and a sister, Virginia King.
Those left to cherish her memories include her loving and devoted husband of 51 years George Jenkins Sr.; four daughters, Sara “Deneen” (Michael) McCoy of Lexington Park, Md., Melissa Jenkins of Atlanta, Leslie (David) Bryant of St. Marys and Victoria Dawson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, George Jenkins Jr. of St. Marys and Dwain Addison of Mississippi; a stepson, Shawn (LaShonda) Marsh of Kingsland; seven grandchildren, Stuart “Justin” Mobley, Michael McCoy Jr., Jalaina Montgomery, Raven Dawson, Juwan McCoy, Chariti Dawson and Dylan Bryant; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald (Lillian) Washington of St. Marys; sisters-in-law, Barbara Sims, Eloise Porter, Betty Jenkins, Thomasena Jenkins, Erma Farlin, Gloria Jenkins, Kathy Pearson and Patricia Jenkins; brothers-in-law, Edward (Lydia) Jenkins, Thomas (Linda) Jenkins and Freddie Jenkins; an aunt, Elvie Washington; a special niece and nephew, Lindsay and Damon Mack; a devoted friend, Delores Attaway; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A wake was not held. Remains laid in state from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Wheeler Street Church of God in St. Marys. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
