George Keck Powell, M.D., AAFP, FACS (ret.), colonel U.S. Army (ret.), 80, of St. Marys passed away Aug. 20, 2019.
He served 26 years in the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon in Vietnam, also at Fort McPherson in Georgia, Fort Knox in Kentucky, Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Gordon in Georgia and with NASA on ocean recoveries for Apollo and Skylab missions.
He held associate clinical professor positions at four different medical schools, became program director for surgical residency programs in El Paso, Texas, and Augusta and finally served as surgical consultant to the surgeon general of the U.S. Army.
He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1964, Colorado College in 1960 and Aurora High School Denver in 1956.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Jane Powell, of 44 years; four children, Katharine Ziegler, Robert Powell, Rebecca Powell and Benjamin Powell; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a chosen sister and brother, Marsha and Larry Sherman.
He was an avid fisherman, golfer, musician, world traveler and loved life, family and friends.
