Daniel Webster Simpson Jr. was born Sept. 28, 1943, in Bessemer, Ala., to the late D.W. Simpson and Clara Fisher Jones. He passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday, July 28, 2019, after 12 years of an extended illness.
Daniel and Edith moved to Camden County in 1968. They joined the First African Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and chairman of the building committee.
He was an educator for 37 years, serving three years in the Dallas County School System (Alabama) and 34 years in the Camden County school system. He served eight years on the Camden County Board of Education.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, D.W. and Clara Simpson; brothers, Calvin Simpson, Edward Simpson, Rev. Willie James Jones and Jimmie Jones; sisters Mary Rose Poole, Rose Mary Scott, Patricia Bell, Sarah Cooks and Josephine Cole.
Survivors include a loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Edith of Kingsland; two children, Daniel (Kimberly) Simpson III of Kingsland and Sheryl (Drexel) Cook of Powder Springs; five grandchildren, Daniel W. Simpson IV, Olivia E. Simpson, Kyla D. Cook, Kailey D. Cook and Drexel D. Cook Jr.; sisters, Louvenia Jones and Clotelia Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Allison Memorial Chapel and funeral home of St. Marys is in charge of arrangements.
