David Kenneth Southern of St. Marys died on April 16, 2019, after a brief illness. He was 77 years of age.
He was born on Sept. 15, 1941, in Chambersburg, Pa., to Genevieve McCrae and David Sawyer Southern. Genevieve McCrae and Herbert Primrose, stepfather, raised David throughout his childhood.
Dave was a proud veteran, having served three years in the Army Security Agency during the early 1960s in Japan. Shortly after his military career, he began his professional career as a sales representative and executive. His working life took him to New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and Atlanta where he ended his career as an executive director for Ciba Vision. Dave retired to St. Marys in 2004.
Dave married Judy Ann Long on June 25, 1966. During the course of their 52-year marriage, they raised three children. Michael, the eldest now lives in Portland, Ore., with wife Cara. Timothy resides in Roswell with his wife Kelli. Teresa Kim lives in New York City.
Dave is survived by his wife, Judy; his three children; and four grandchildren, Matthew, Mirabel, Andrew and Will. Also surviving Dave is his sister, Lucille Southern Wright and husband Alan of New Oxford, Pa., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Upon retirement, Dave and Judy enjoyed an active retirement both within the local community of St. Marys and to points around the world. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and the South Pacific. Dave was one of the founders of The Camden Roundtable, a local organization devoted to bringing a diverse group of people and viewpoints to the local community in the spirit of civil discourse and building community.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family asks that donations be made to The American Heart Association and/or First Presbyterian Church.
