Gregory Wayne Spence, 63, passed away in St. Marys on Nov. 7, 2019.
He was born May 4, 1956, in Waycross to the late Gordon Lewis Spence and Jean Orrizell Crews Spence. Gregory was an outdoor person. He never played sports at school but he enjoyed watching the games, especially football. He enjoyed walking in the woods and being on the river.
Fishing with his father in the creeks of Camden County was one of his favorite things. Throughout his life, he maintained his fascination with the tides of those creeks. Even during the days when he was no longer able to fish, he wanted the driver to slow down so he could check out how low or high the waters were as he crossed the bridges over Borrell Creek on Highway 40. He usually checked on his way back home to see the changes in the flow.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Vicki L. Spence.
He is survived by his aunts, Leola Crews, Leona Brisbane and Anita Turner; an uncle, Verldon Spence; cousins, Sharon Spence Allen, Iris Turner, Gail Faucette, Donna Drury, Sherri Cox, Lori Avery and Pam Prevatt; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the chapel of Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home with Rev. Parnell Aldridge officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Homeland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brandon Drury, Josh Owens, Jessica Drury, Brian Avery, Tommy Faucette and David Prevatt.
