William E. Stoddard Jr., 93, of St. Marys passed away peacefully Feb. 13, 2016. 

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Feb. 2, 1923, he was the son of the late William E. and Nona Stoddard and a loving late stepfather, Wesley Jackson. He married Ann Harris in the Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church in St. Marys June 4, 1949. They had four children who preceded him in death, Lynn, William III, Keefe and Brian.

He attended Stanton High School in Jacksonville and Morehouse College in Atlanta. He worked at Gilman Paper Company, spending his last years as a wood inspector. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Woodbine where he served as lay reader and on the mission council, diocesan council and Belize Companion Commission. He also attended King of Peace Episcopal Church. He served on the pilots commission of St. Marys and as chairperson of both the tax equalization board and the grand jury of Camden County. 

William served as Worshipful Master of Zion Lodge No. 7, was named Mason of the Year in 1955 and was honored with a plaque for outstanding community service at the Dr. Martin Luther King annual banquet in 1993. 

He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, football and tennis. In his later days, he and his friends formed a tennis team fondly nicknamed the Geriatric Tennis Group. His hobbies over the years were photography, calligraphy and dancing. He was noted for walking his dog, Oughta, twice a day. 

William’s survivors include his lovely, loving wife, Ann Harris Stoddard; two grandchildren, Tamu (husband Frederick) Talton of Deland, Fla., and Kamal (wife Cya) Stoddard of East Point; seven great-grandchildren, Noemi, Jendaya and Osei Talton, Usuaya, Viresha and Oluwadurotimi Stoddard and Angel Green; a sister-in-law, Bebe Sellers of Annandale, N.J.; three surrogate sons, Sylvester Ginn, M. Arnold Graham III and Freddie Jenkins; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
