Martin L. Thomas Sr., 91, of Kingsland passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at Community Hospice, Morris Center, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Born Jan. 5, 1927, in St. Marys, he was the son of the late George A. and Jane Elizabeth Hernandez Thomas. He was also preceded in death by his first wife (the mother of his children), Nona Geoghgan Thomas; and second wife, Carol Ann Thomas; three children, Jane Batten, Aleatha Reddick and Allen Thomas; and five brothers.
Martin was a lifelong resident of Camden County and a shrimp boat captain, having been employed with Calvin Lang, Alvin Dickey and John Miller. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW, American Legion and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was an avid pool shooter, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and crabbing. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country honorably during World War II.
Survivors include his four children, Ruth Barry (Chet) of Black Mountain, N.C., Martin Thomas Jr. (Mary) of Woodbine, Susan Perryman (George) of Yulee, Fla., and Harry Thomas (Gloria) of Folkston; sister, Elizabeth Slaughterback; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys with Pastor Sammy Spradley officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
Pallbearers were John Thomas, Clifford Barry, James Perryman, T.J. Perryman, Wesley Batten, Tracy Thomas, George Thomas, Chris Riggins and Kalib Batten.
Allison Memorial Chapel and Funeral Home of St. Marys was in charge of arrangements.
