Winnie Thomas, 87, of Palmetto, Ga., died Saturday evening, Nov. 16, 2019, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin following an extended illness.
Born in Waynesville, she was the daughter of the late Robert Roy and Coyla Rhoden Drury. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Roberta Colson and Jaurelle Berlin; and brother, Eugene Drury.
She was a 1948 graduate of Brantley County High School and retired as secretary to the commanding officer at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in 1987.
She, alongside her husband, Lyde, grew Christmas trees and blueberries in Woodbine and Hoboken for many years. She was active in the Georgia Christmas Tree Association, the Georgia Blueberry Growers Association and the Camden County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and for many years was an active member of Kingsland First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Strang Carter (Ervin) of Palmetto; grandson, Andy Carter (Aimee) of Macon; granddaughter, Jenny Carter Wallace (Jordan) of Palmetto; great-grandson, Carter Wallace; stepson, Terry Thomas (Alice); grandsons, Justin Thomas and family, Eric Thomas and family, of College Station, Texas, and stepson Steve Thomas of Darien; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Homeward Cemetery near Waverly.
