Eugene Walker, 73, of the Greenville community in Kingsland passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla.
Eugene Walker Sr. stepped into time on March 31, 1944, to the late Luther Walker Sr. and Daisy Bell Anderson Walker.
Eugene gave his life to Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Robert Dawson. He served faithfully at Zion Sisters Missionary Baptist Church as a member of the male chorus and Sunday school superintendent.
In 1962, Eugene graduated from Ralph J. Bunche High School in Woodbine. He was very active in football as a trainer and also in track. After graduating from high school, he was employed at Gilman Hospital and later Gilman Paper Company. He was a member of the Royal Workers’ Masonic Lodge No. 144.
In 1967, Eugene married Eunice Roundtree and to this union four children were born, Gene Walker, Erika Davis, Towanna Miller and Timothy Walker. On May 10, 2003, Eugene and Betty Grant joined in holy matrimony. Besides his parents, Eunice and Betty, one brother, Calvin Walker, preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children; brothers, Herman (Ira) Walker of Jacksonville, Fla., Luther (Doretha) Walker Jr. of Kingsland, Ammie Lee (Iris) Johnson of Kingsland and Rev. Roosevelt (Phyllis) Rhone of St. Marys; sisters, Willie Mae Washington of Woodbine, Barbara (Joe) Davis, Lara Walker and Luverta Baker, all of Kingsland and Jeri Drummond of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a very special, devoted and caring niece, Sean’dee Blake; loving aunts, Peggy Reed and Sara Walker; one loving uncle, L.B. Walker of California; extended family members, Lawrence Anders, Harry Anders and Kenneth (Jodi) Anders; loving in-laws, Leon (Janessa) Grant and Carlis Grant; very special friends, Vera (Buddy) Payne, Robert Walker, Willie Dunham, Jim Banks, Bishop Arthur Dawson Jr. and Rev. Bernard Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at First African Missionary Baptist Church in Kingsland. The body will lie in state two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Mallette Cemetery.
