JDA announces top five marine center names
County developers are seeking the public’s help in selecting a name for the St. Marys marine center, a concept under development at the former site of the Gilman paper mill on the North River.
The Joint Development Authority solicited name suggestions from the public earlier this month and established an online system for collecting those ideas.
There were about 150 entries, said Tiera Cole, JDA office manager. The board and staff have narrowed those suggestions down to five finalists:
• Cumberland St. Marys Harbor
• Georgia Coast Marina
• The Wharf at St. Marys
• Cumberland Shores
• Cumberland Wharf
Members of the public can vote on their favorite name on the Camden County Chamber of Commerce website at www.camdenchamber.com/form/view/11392
The Joint Development Authority has a purchase option on a 50-acre portion of the former paper mill property and has begun promoting it to prospective tenants. The JDA envisions a full-service marine center for the site with on-site boat repair and maintenance, dry and wet boat storage, retail space and other amenities.
As part of its marketing efforts, the JDA wants to select a name for the marine center that embodies the character of the site.
“An important criteria for this will be that the name captures the sense of place of St. Marys, both figuratively and literally, since we need people to find us on a map,” said JDA director James Coughlin.
The JDA plans to announce the final name selection on March 2, and possibly the name of the person who submitted the winning entry. There were some duplicate suggestions, Cole said.
