Marching Wildcats ready for new program, new season
The Marching Wildcats debuted their new program for the season at the Wildcats' home opener last Friday in Kingsland.
Drum majors Rory English and Gabbie Bicanovsky led the marching band as they performed the national anthem before the show and an arrangement of songs for the halftime show.
This year's space-themed musical lineup includes classic hits like "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Happy Together" and "I Can See for Miles" and the show will evolve with some new elements as the season progresses. The band students have been preparing for weeks by memorizing their sheet music and practicing their field formations.
Select groups of band members, like the percussion groups, started practicing at Camden County High a month before school started.
All band members had to participate in a mandatory band camp in late July that ran from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. On the last day of camp, students treated parents and family members to a special performance, followed by a pot luck at the Ninth Grade Center.
The students continued to practice for four hours per day up until the first week of school. Now that school has started, they work together after school three days a week.
It all comes together on the field, with the help of band director Allan Smith, assistant director Sonya Williams and visual coach Erin Goff.
