Storm forces closures in Camden

Camden County public schools and local government offices — include Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base — will be closed Thursday due to Hurricane Michael, a major storm expected to cut across Georgia this week.

“After careful consideration of the latest forecast for the coastal area and an abundance of caution, Officials have decided to close all Camden County, City of Kingsland, City of St. Marys and City of Woodbine offices, in addition to Camden County Schools for Thursday, Oct. 11,” said a joint statement released midday Wednesday. “The safety of our community is the first priority.”

Camden was one of the only school districts in the region to hold classes on Wednesday, but announced the Thursday cancellation late Wednesday morning.

The Friday night football game in Colquitt County has been postponed since that county is closer to the path of the storm. The game will be rescheduled for Oct. 19. The Wildcats will travel to Lowndes on Oct. 26 and host Tift on Nov. 2.

College of Coastal Georgia and Coastal Pines Technical College also canceled classes for Wednesday and Thursday.

Cumberland Island National Seashore closed to the public late Tuesday afternoon and will re-open after all docks and facilities have been given the “all clear” following the storm.

The hurricane, estimated at Category 4 strength on Wednesday as it made landfall, is expected to bring high winds and rain to southeast Georgia. Camden County remains under a tropical storm warning, but no evacuations have been called locally.

While Camden is not expected to feel the brunt of the storm, area residents should prepare for possible power outages and exercise caution when driving. Heavy downpours may cause standing water on the roadways and high winds could mean downed power lines.

“Although we still expect the impacts to be minor in Camden County, the effects of this storm are still unpredictable. As conditions continue to change, the public is asked to stay off of roadways until the weather improves,” stated the joint news release.

Those living in Camden are encouraged to sign up for Code RED alerts to receive official instructions in the event of a public emergency. Citizens can enroll on the county website at www.co.camden.ga.us/482/CodeRED.

School and government operations are expected to resume on Friday, Oct. 12, but citizens should monitor news sources for any further cancellations or announcements related to the storm.
