Mr. Carnell Smith Jr., 61, of St. Marys passed away unexpectedly on the late morning of Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Southeast Georgia Health System in St. Marys.

Mr. Smith was born in Folkston on Sept. 19, 1955. He is the son of the late Carnell Smith Sr. and Vivian L. Wise Smith. Carnell grew up in Camden County and attended Camden County High School. He later became a paper machine operator at Gilman Paper Company in St. Marys for 20-plus years.

His family said of him: “He was a beloved father, son, brother and uncle. As a young boy, he had a love for swimming and was a member of the swim team for many years growing up. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He always had the best stories to tell and would have you laughing until your sides hurt. He was a fantastic listener and always had the best advice. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly, all of whom he had special nicknames for from the time they were born. He enjoyed watching football and baseball. He was a proud Georgia Bulldog and Atlanta Braves fan. He is going to be terribly missed by all that knew and loved him.”

Mr. Smith is survived by his mother, Vivian L. Smith of St. Marys; his daughters, Jennifer (Wade) Sweat of St. Marys, Joylynn Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Breanna Smith of Kingsland; his son, Josh Smith of Jacksonville; his sisters, Donna Thomas and Lynn Panzone, both of St. Marys; his grandchildren, Heather (Jamie) Stanley, John Sweat and Haley Sweat all of St. Marys; his nephew, Chad (Heather) Jones of St. Marys; his nieces, Christena Panzone of Brunswick and Maghan (John) Jacobs of the Browntown community; a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins; and his fiancé, Ruth Mettert of St. Marys.
