Virgil “Shorty” Crews, 81, of Folkston passed away Feb. 18 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born June 2, 1935, to the late Walter Crews and Verdie Walker Crews. Shorty was an Army veteran during the Korean conflict. He retired in 1990 from the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge after 20 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger days.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Turner Crews, and seven siblings, Lottie Redding, Bryant Crews, Louise Bechion, Delvin Crews, Quitman Crews, Monroe Crews and Corine Carter.
He is survived by his two stepchildren, Reatha Blount and Jerald Ard (Debbie) of Folkston; three grandchildren, Anna Tate (U.S. Navy Lt. David) of Jacksonville, Fla., Brandi (Casey) Young and Amanda Horne of Folkston; five great-grandchildren, U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Wyatt Leugers of Indian Head, Md., Nolen Leugers and Chase Leugers of Jacksonville, Madelyn Young of Folkston and Paisley Horne of Folkston; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the chapel of Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home with Rev. Jody Griffin officiating. Burial followed in Traders Hill Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Wyatt Leugers, Nolen Leugers, Dan Wilson, Clarence McLendon, Gerald Crews and Shawn Sikes.
