Ernest Bailey, 86, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.
Born July 17, 1931 in Valdosta, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Bailey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Kay Bailey, and son, David Ernest Bailey.
Ernest served in the United States Army prior to marrying the love of his life, Doris Kay Lee, and raising their six children in Savannah.
He retired from his insurance career with Independent Life and settled in Folkston on Stokes Lake where he enjoyed one of his favorite hobbies — fishing — almost daily from his dock.
While a member of Camp Pickney Baptist Church in Folkston, he was ordained a minister and served as pastor of Browntown Baptist Church. Ernest served as deacon, music director and pastor of various Baptist churches in Savannah and South Georgia. He was a member of Landrum Masonic Lodge No. 48 F&AM in Savannah.
Ernest loved and served his God, his country and his family.
Survivors include his children, Debra “Deb” Maner of St. Marys, Cheryl Bailey (William McClenahan) of Arlington, Va., Larry Bailey (Robin) of Savannah, Daniel Bailey of Fort Myers, Fla., and Rebecca Stroder of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Kay Manning, Reid Maner, Ryan Maner, Stephen Maner, Mitchell Bailey, Jennifer O’Brien, Joseph Bailey, Matthew Bailey, Erika Gushulak, David Bailey and Rebecca Bailey; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Kingsland First United Methodist Church sanctuary with Pastor Devin Schultz officiating. Burial to follow at Camp Pinckney Baptist Churchyard Cemetery in Folkston. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall at 10 a.m., one hour prior to services.
