Mr. Ernest Rogers Jr., 74, of Kingsland passed away at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick on Saturday, July 7, 2018.
Mr. Rogers was born in Lake Park on June 12, 1944. He was the son of Ernest Rogers Sr. and Julia Mitchell Rogers. He was a 1964 graduate of the old Camden County High School when it was in Woodbine. Also in 1964, he married the love of his life, Wanda Jeanette Peeples, and they shared life and love together until her passing in 1985. Mr.
Rogers’ family shares that he was always a man of determination. He never quit until he succeeded. He joined the United States Army in 1971, taking basic training at Fort Benning and was then assigned to Fort Knox, Ky., for training. He became a construction engineer with the 370th Engineer Detachment stationed at Kings Bay.
Although he was not in an airborne unit, he was determined to earn jump wings. So in his 30s, he completed airborne training at Fort Benning. He later retired as a chief warrant officer 3 in 2004. He worked for Kraft Bag and James Rivers in St. Marys and then went on to become a Kings Bay firefighter in his 50s. He was also a member of the Masons.
Throughout his life, he worked very hard and took great pride in a job well done. He was the embodiment of the saying, “When you are going through hell, keep going!” You could find him in Steffen’s Restaurant with the morning crowd. He spent his spare time hunting and fishing. After retirement, he took several hunting trips to Africa, Canada and South America. Most days, you could find him outside in his yard working or cultivating his fruit trees. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his son, Vince (April) Rogers of Kingsland; his sister, Jeanette Crews of Hilliard, Fla.; his brothers, Franklin (Shirley) Rogers in Wyoming and Oliver (Penny) Rogers of Patterson; and his grandsons, Andrew “Bailey” Rogers and Ryan Ernest Rogers, both of Kingsland.
