Carey, Stokes place at state
Chala Carey finished top-four in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and triple-jumper Jayla Stokes added to Camden County High's point total last week at the state track and field meet in Albany.
Of 50 schools earning at least one point in the Class AAAAA team standings, Camden tied for 17th with Winder-Barrow, both teams notching 12 points apiece in competition last Thursday through Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Carey ran third in the 200 final (24.59) after qualifying third-fastest (24.35) in a preliminary heat. She advanced in the 100 with an 12.12 prelim that matched Stephenson's Rena Clowers for sixth-best, and lowered that to a fourth-place 11.92 for the final.
Warner Robins' Cassondra Hall captured both sprints in 11.49 and 23.88.
Carey added a 10th-place showing in the long jump (18-0).
Stokes' best leap was 37-1½, which was good for eighth place and a point for Camden. Also for CCHS, Devin Lanham heaved the shotput 34-3 for 13th place, and Kelsea Collins ran a 48.09 in a 300 hurdles qualifier.
North Springs grabbed the overall Class AAAAA team championship with 50 points, with Warner Robins (44) second and Chapel Hill (40), Starr's Mill (39) and Creekview (34) third through fifth.
