The St. Marys Middle School Bobcats won the first-ever SEC Middle School Championships on Thursday, Dec. 2.
The competition was comprised of the four middle schools in Glynn County and the two middle schools in Camden.
The Bobcats started the night with a 63-18 win over Jane Macon Middle School in the first round followed by a 54-19 victory over Risley Middle School.
The last match of the night was against Glynn Middle, which had victories over Camden Middle and Needwood Middle earlier in the night. Both teams competed hard and at the end, the SMMS Bobcats won the dual with a score of 47-18.
The Bobcats started off the dual with Wesley Farling (75 pounds) winning 9-2 (major) over Glynn. Glynn quickly answered back with a pin over SMMS wrestler Owen Orendi (80 pounds).
The Bobcats would go on to win seven straight matches: Brianna Higgins win by technical fall (90 pounds), Darren Dejesus win by major (100 pounds), Elijah Hattaway win by fall (110 pounds), Brandon Higgins win by decision (120 pounds), Aidan Buck win by fall (130 pounds), Brock Weaver win by fall (140 pounds), Julian Dailey win by fall (150 pounds) and Ricky Herman win by decision (160 pounds).
Glynn Middle won the next two matches over Elijah Webb by fall (180 pounds) and picking up a forfeit at the 210-pound weight class. Joey Shultz (heavyweight) was the last match for the Bobcats and he ended the night with a major over Glynn Middle’s heavyweight.
