The Thiokol Memorial Project Museum will host the annual 52nd Thiokol Commemorative Ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Camden County PSA Complex, 1050 Wildcat Drive in Kingsland.
This year’s theme is “Their Spirit illuminates the City on the Hill.”
The museum, which is located at 115 S. Lee St. in Kingsland, strives to “pay homage to our patriots and heroes in a measure worthy of their service, impact and sacrifice,” according to a news release.
“Our future mission is to plan, build and endow a Thiokol Memorial National Monument on 60 acres of land,” the release said. “The national memorial will feature a monument, museum and education center to remember and honor their service.”
The monument will honor the 600 Thiokol plant workers who were at the plant during the explosion Feb. 3, 1971. It will also honor the “heroes” who responded – including 16 cities, the U.S. Army, Navy and Coast Guard and the American Red Cross.
Saturday’s ceremony will be led by Joe Bryant, a retired Camden County Schools educator.
There will be a special tribute to the former Fire Chiefs Morris Peeples and Elvin Boles. The Kings Bay Naval Base Color Guard will present the National Standard.
The keynote speaker is Paul Cosenza. Youth and musicians will also perform.
