Hurricane Idalia came and went.
On Wednesday, Camden County experiences the outer edges of the hurricane, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm. A late push to the west kept Camden County of her direct path, but damage and power outages were reported Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, a gust of wind resulted in an electrical fire at the Georgia Episcopal Center’s Griffith Building.
“A gust of wind blew a tree over, which downed the power lines, bending the mast electrical service pole on top of the building,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook. “This started an electrical fire in the attic of the Griffith Building at the religious center.”
The center serves as a church camp for youth. No groups were at the center — only a caretaker. No injuries were reported.
Camden County Fire Rescue and the sheriff’s office responded to put out the fire.
An 18-wheel semi truck crashed on Exit 3 northbound during “elevated winds,” the sheriff’s office.
The driver survived the crash and was taken to the hospital.
The sheriff’s office estimated 10,000 Camden County residences and businesses were without power Wednesday. Northern parts of the county also experienced significant storm damage.
No storm-related deaths were reported in Camden County, as of Thursday morning.
