Robert "Bert" Guy
A former Brunswick Judicial Circuit Superior Court judge who was arrested outside a Jacksonville strip club and charged with driving under the influence saw his charges reduced in January, according to court records.
Robert “Bert” Guy, 48, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 6, and charged with two separate DUI counts and an additional charge for refusing to submit to a blood alcohol level breath test.
The arrest stemmed from a fender bender Guy was reportedly involved in. Law enforcement records say Guy backed a car into a nearby truck in the early morning hours outside a strip club.
According to the case log on the Duval County Clerk of Court’s website, Guy’s DUI was reduced to reckless driving, and he pleaded “nolo contendere,” a legal maneuver where the former judge essentially doesn’t admit guilt or dispute the charges. He also pleaded nolo contendere for refusing to take a breathalyzer, and he was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to one day in jail, with time served.
Court records indicate he was fined $500, plus additional court costs. Guy also completed 50 community service hours, a DUI victim impact panel and level-one DUI school.
After the October arrest, Guy reported his arrest to the Judicial Qualifications Commission, which launched an investigation into his behavior. A week later, Guy submitted his resignation to Gov. Brian Kemp, effective Oct. 16.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the 5 County Brunswick Judicial Circuit,” Guy wrote. “I will forever be grateful to my Judicial friends in this Circuit and across the state.
“I appreciate my remarkable staff and Courthouse personnel and the attorneys and their zealous advocacy for their clients.”
