The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate died Tuesday morning in its jail, according to a news release from the law enforcement agency.
The sheriff’s office did not identify the inmate or indicate how the inmate died.
The sheriff’s office said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an “independent criminal investigation” in accordance with “standard protocol,” and the sheriff’s office’s Internal Affairs Division has begun an administrative review to determine whether “policies, procedures and professional standards” were followed.
“We understand the seriousness of this situation and the concern it may cause within our community,” the news release said. “The Camden County Sheriff’s Office is committed to transparency, accountability and a thorough investigative process. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate."
