Led by local historian Kay Westberry, a tour of Oak Grove Cemetery will be offered Saturday, Aug. 7.
A tour of historic Oak Grove Cemetery will start off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7. Local historian Kay Westberry will again be leading this popular tour, which is open to the general public.
Majestic Oak Grove has been an intriguing location since it was created and laid out as part of St. Marys in 1787-88. Approximately 29 soldiers of the American Revolution as well as soldiers from all wars fought by our country lie in peaceful repose under the beautiful live oaks that shade their rest. The city’s ties with the ocean and rivers is obvious from the markers in honor of captains, seamen and fishermen.
Fascinating stories abound. In addition to the tour of the cemetery, St. Marys history will be presented at stops along the way. Due to past interest, it was decided to limit tour attendance to 25. Reservations may be made by calling (912) 882-5301. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name, how many in your party and a phone number where you can be reached in case the tour has to be rescheduled due to weather conditions. If you need to cancel, please use the same number to do so.
You will not receive a confirmation call. A day or two before the tour when good weather for the tour is certain, you will be contacted by phone to confirm your reservation. If you decide to attend at the last minute and it’s too late to call, please come anyway.
Please park on the Weed Street side and meet at the main entrance gate there. The tour will last approximately an hour and a half or as long as questions keep coming.
The tour is free, but donations are accepted and will be used for repairing monuments in need. Masks are not required, but social distancing will be observed.
