Sheriff breaking law to alleviate jail overcrowding

The Camden County jail’s longstanding practice of releasing inmates without paying the bail that has been set for them violates state law, which all Georgia law enforcement officers are sworn to uphold. There is no provision in Georgia state law allowing sheriffs to release an inmate on an unsecured judicial release, also known as an “own recognizance” or “OR bond.”

Camden County public safety officials issued an urgent plea this week — please save 9-1-1 resources for only the most serious of emergencies. COVID-19 is impacting the community to such an extent that our emergency medical workers are having trouble meeting the demand.

Questions remain following deadly plane crash

The tragic deaths of flight instructor David Cuttino and his student, Fernandina Beach High School graduate Alexis George, led to the immediate question of what caused their plane to crash into the St. Marys River. There are still more questions than following the release of reports from the local medical examiner and the National Transportation Safety Board.
