COLEMAN – Harold Coleman, 76, of York, S.C., received his call to eternal rest Tuesday, July 5, 2022, after a lengthy illness.

Harold was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Bailey, N.C., to Connie Coleman and Lizzie Clifton Coleman.

Harold was a graduate of Spaulding High School in Spring Hope, N.C. There, he participated in the band as its drum major, receiving the position after his brother, Collie Coleman, when he graduated. He was very active in front of the band, and years after that, he was recognized by some younger individuals as having heard about him from their parents or seeing the band march along the streets. What a treat it was for him to be remembered as stepping high for Spaulding High School.

After spending four years in the U.S. Army, he lived in Arlington, Va., where he began his educational pursuits with the University of the District of Columbia and graduated with an AA in applied science. From there, he continued his continuing education courses in print management. He worked for various printing companies in the Washington, D.C., metro area and finished his career with Beach Brothers Printing in Rockville, Md. It was a fun-loving business.

In 1968, he met his love, Marvene Mack, of Washington, D.C. They built a life together while traveling to different places and enjoying their married life before beginning a family. One memorable event was riding in a boat underground in a cavern in Howe, N.Y. They were married March 21, 1970, in Washington, D.C. Harold and Marvene went on to have two children, Tonii L. Coleman and Harold Lyndon Coleman.

Harold attended several churches in Bailey, N.C., and Matthews Memorial Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

In 2006, Harold retired, moved from Lanham, Md., to York, S.C., and spent his time cooking great food, traveling, preparing taxes for VITA and relaxing in his recliner. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, attending Sunday School, and was president of the Brotherhood Ministry, where they undertook numerous projects. He was also an active member of the Spaulding High School Alumni Association as president of his graduating class.

Harold is predeceased by his parents and brother, Dr. Collie Coleman.

He is survived by his wife; children; son-in-law, Ronald Combs; grandson, Rhys E. Combs of Fort Mill, S.C.; and sisters, Hilda Hector of Knightdale, N.C., Bobby Jean Stove of Dover, N.J., and Verginia Hall of Freeport, Ill. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, whom he dearly loved.

A celebration of life was noon Sunday, July 10, at Union Baptist Church, 1195 Hands Mill Highway in Rock Hill, S.C., with Raymond Whitaker officiating.
