GILBERT – Beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, Steve Wiley Gilbert, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 27, 2022.

Steve is the first child of Charles and Diane Gilbert, and he was born July 23, 1967, in Athens, Ga. Always curious and inventive, Steve exhibited strong mechanical skills from an early age through his love of Hot Wheels cars, tinkering with small electric motors and rebuilding carburetors. As an adult, Steve channeled that talent to become a master mechanic ASE-certified technician, specializing in transmissions, while still enjoying his love of mud truck racing in his free time.

Steve also made time for his family and friends. Steve accompanied his mom on “junkin” trips in search of the best yard sale finds. He took Sunday bike rides with his sister. Steve loved visiting, grilling out and fishing with friends. Steve enjoyed lounging by the pool with his brother-in-law, and he assisted his sister and niece in building a tiki bar and beginning a “tiny home” remodel. Despite his active schedule, Steve made time to view the occasional episode of “The Lawrence Welk” show with his mom, watch drag racing with his sister and brother-in-law, and he was a devoted fan of “Pigman: The Series,” which he watched with his mother.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Charles M. Gilbert.

He is survived by his mother, Diane C. Gilbert; sister, Rachel Gilbert Sullivan; brother-in-law, Michael Sullivan; niece, Jocelyn Judd; sister, Sara (Libby) Courson; nephew, Tyler Courson; and many friends, Mark, Tracy, Tim and John Fritton, John Thomas, Kim and Dave Morris, Jonathan and Bobbie Heane, David Nevins, Tracy Dain-Hare and so many more.

Steve was a loving son, supportive brother, thoughtful uncle and a cherished friend to many. He will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
