• Training new employees and providing them with on-the-job training to ensure that they are able to perform their jobs safely and efficiently.

• Establishing relationships with suppliers to ensure the restaurant has access to the products it needs to operate efficiently.

• Reviewing financial statements and sales reports to monitor business performance and make adjustments where necessary.

• Maintaining an inventory of food items to ensure that there is always enough for customers to purchase without running out.

• Scheduling staff members’ shifts and making sure that they are aware of their schedules.

• Supervising employees’ work performance and addressing performance issues as they arise.

• Training employees in food preparation techniques, including cooking methods and food safety practices.

• Overseeing the restaurant’s operation, including hiring and dismissing staff members.

Why did you go into your particular field? I was 15 years old when I started my first job. The food service industry seemed to be the only "job" I could have at my age. Little did I know. The industry would end up sucking me in years later. 

 

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A neonatologist.

 

What was your first job? I work at a coffee shop in downtown S. Marys.

 

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Whenever you see someone who is doing great, you better learn to enjoy the distance between them and you. Because what you see are their results. However, you don't know what they went through to get there.

 

What’s your favorite thing about your job? Besides my staff and the "regulars" that have become my family, it is impossible for me to predict what can happen at the restaurant on a daily basis, and I enjoy a good challenge. 

 

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started your career? Failure is success in progress.

 

Who do you consider to be your greatest mentor and why? When I first started working for AVEDA Corporate, I was fortunate that one of my supervisors (Elizabeth Johnson) became my mentor. The two most important things I learned from her are the value of consistency and accountability.

 

When you’re not at work, what do you do to relax? Simply put my cellphone on silent.

 

What is something about you that most people don’t know? Ironically, I was fired from Outerbanks while in college. Several years later, the manager who let me go called and asked if I would oversee the business with her while Alfred (the late owner) traveled to China. I agreed on the three-week commitment. My time off was approved, from my corporate job in Jacksonville, Fla. Two days into me helping her out, she quit. Those three weeks have now turned into years.

 

How do you hope to grow in your career? Expanding into multiple locations is ideal. 

 

If you couldn’t do what you’re doing now, what would you be doing? I honestly have no clue Early retirement is too good to be true. So, I would probably, go back into some form of education or business development management.
