The National Park Service on Cumberland Island recently finished collecting and taking possession of the specimens acquired by Carol Ruckdeschel over around 60 years of work, beginning in the 1960s when she began visiting Cumberland while a student at Georgia State University.

Right on the heels of the discovery of the first North Atlantic right whale calf of the season, scientists spotted the second one, born of mother Minus One, listed as No. 2430 in the North Atlantic Right Whale Catalog.

Hospital announces CEO’s departure in March 2025

The major hospital system serving Camden County and surrounding communities is seeking a new leader. Last week, Southeast Georgia Health System announced its president and CEO, Scott Raynes, was departing for a job in his hometown of West Virginia.

Lockhart rolls to win for St. Marys mayor

Longtime St. Marys resident Greg Lockhart will be the city’s next mayor. Lockhart, 60, collected 72% of the vote, besting St. Marys City Councilwoman Lisa James, who secured 28% of the vote in the Tuesday runoff for the city’s top political office.
