Raymond "Ray" Joseph Lewis, 69, of Kingsland passed away at his residence July 11, 2021.
Services to celebrate Ray's life will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at Allison Memorial Chapel with Mike Plezia officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and the Kingsland Police Department and Camden County Sheriff's Office will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will be receiving friends from 4 p.m. until service time.
Ray was born May 14, 1952, in Gloversville, New York, to Robert Gene Lewis and Phyllis Jean Graff Lewis. Coming from Virginia Beach, Virginia, he had lived in Kingsland since 1989 retiring from the United States Navy in 1992 as chief petty officer after 21 years of dedicated service.
He attended Armstrong State University, where he received his Georgia Peace Officer Certification. Ray served Camden County as a narcotics K-9 handler with the Kingsland Police Department from 1997-1999, then joined Camden County Sheriff's Office as an explosive K-9 handler and deputy sheriff from 1999-2005, returned to Kingsland Police Department serving as a patrolman from 2005-2007, and then retiring as patrol sergeant in 2014.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle, and loved spending time with his family. He had a green thumb and was an avid plant lover. Ray enjoyed Facebook, and sometimes ended up in Facebook jail. Once he was released from Facebook jail, you knew it!
Ray is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sheila Lewis; father, Robert Lewis of Cottonwood, Alabama; daughters, Jennifer Ortiz (Joey) of West Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Adrienne Parker (Jeff) of Martinsburg, West Virginia; two special nieces that Ray thought of as daughters, Misty (Forrester) Brinkley (Chucky) of Dothan, Alabama and Tiffany Eakes; a brother, Robert Lewis, Jr. (Pam) of Laurenburg, North Carolina; sisters, Celeste Key of Headland, Alabama, Tanya Scott (Aaron) of Minnesota and Connie Lewis of Fernley of Nevada; grandchildren, Gwen, David, Max, Stephen, Leo and Jaxton; great-granddaughter, Aubree Grace and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Graff Lewis.
