Bruce was born Jan. 27, 1946, in San Francisco, Calif., to Mortimer Chester Hill and Jean Carleton Hill. He spent a lot of his younger years in Panama, Central America, where his dad was a Panama Canal pilot after graduating from high school in San Diego. His military career spanned 20 years, retiring in May 1984 as a navy chief.

He served on the USS Forrestal in 1967 and later the USS John F. Kennedy.

His favorite posts were Royal Air Force St Mawgan, Kent, England and Holy Loch assistant coordinator. After retirement from the Navy, he worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, N.H., until 1990. He then transferred to Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Ga., as a civil service crane operator until 2006. Bruce was a proud Mason, a member of St. Aspinquid Lodge #198 in York, Maine, and past master of Camden Lodge #476 Kingsland and secretary for 15 years. He was an avid golfer, which he enjoyed very much. He never knew a stranger and was a good friend to all.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ross Hill, formerly of Scotland, for 38 years; son, Chris B. Hill (Polly) of California; brother, Mark Hill (Pat) of Maine; sister-in-law, Sally Dewar (Freddie) of Massachusetts and Alison Thomson (Scotland); several nieces and nephews from Scotland, Australia and New York; and cousins in Washington State.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Susan Hill; in-laws, David and Nancy Ross; and a brother-in-law, David Thomson.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
