Ms. Harriett Knowles Atkinson peacefully passed away on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at the Senior Care Center in St. Marys.

She was born July 30, 1927, in Orange, New Jersey, to the late Harry and Quinta Swartz.

Ms. Atkinson is survived by her son, James Knowles, and his wife, Teresa, of St. Marys; her daughter, Barbara Knowles and companion, Linda, of Crawfordville, Florida; her granddaughters, Nicole Readdick and husband Trevor, and Georgia Kay McCollum, all of St. Marys; and her great-grandson, Frazier Readdick.

Besides her parents, Ms. Atkinson was also preceded in passing by her husbands, Grover “Jim” Knowles and Felix Atkinson Sr., and her beloved sister, Jane Henderson Forlenza.

Harriett was proud of being a member of T.L. Spence Jr. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 31 for over 30 years, serving as president four times; a charter member of VFW Post 4995 Auxiliary; and serving on the Board of Council on Aging. She was an original staff member of Tall Timbers Research Station in Thomasville. She was an avid reader and loved mysteries.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 33, Thomasville, GA 31799.

Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland is entrusted with Ms. Atkinson’s arrangements.
