‘Voice of the Cats,’ J.C. Outlaw, dies

J.C. Outlaw said when he graduated from Camden County High School in 1974, he wanted one day to be the voice of the Wildcats. His goal as a broadcaster realized, Outlaw called more than 400 games from 1983 to 2019 as coaches, rosters and schemes changed and evolved.

Gov. Brian Kemp visited St. Marys on Friday morning for a breakfast rally, and he promised voters $1 billion in property tax relief. The rally – held at Seagle’s Restaurant in downtown St. Marys – drew about 40 attendees, including former State Rep.

The Camden County High School Marching Band was named the Grand Champions of the Okefenokee Sound of Gold Marching Competition on Oct. 22. The band scored a 97.0 in its historic win and collected a 7-foot-tall trophy.

The Camden County Board of Commissioners accepted a $60,178.50 grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) on Oct. 18 for the purchase of portable AM radio stations.

In September 2021, the College of Coastal Georgia lost one of its beloved faculty members who truly inspired students to be their best. Associate Professor of Nursing Dawana Gibbs, who was a champion for students and emphasized a culture of compassion in nursing, died.

County administrator bound for Florida

Camden County is in need of a new county administrator. Steve Howard, 50, who has served as the top executive of county government for 15 years, was hired Tuesday night by the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners as its next county manager. “It’s bittersweet,” Howard said.
