Kingsland to hold special election for council seat

Kingsland City Council will be working a man down for the rest of the year and into 2021 until a special election can be called. “We will miss LaMar (Stokes). He did an excellent job here for the city and he was a valued member of council,” Mayor Grayson Day said Monday.

Harbor Freight moving into old Kmart store

The old Kmart on Highway 40 in Kingsland is getting a new life as a Harbor Freight Tools store in the new year. The store is expected to create 25 to 30 new jobs.

Breast cancer survivor finds herself back in the fight

Natalie Furr thought she was doing everything right. She has a family history of breast cancer but she was a healthy 36-year-old who’d had children, breastfed her children and did regular self checks. Then she felt a small lump in her breast that became a cancer diagnosis in January 2019.

Judge sentences anti-nuke activists

Two more activists were sentenced last week for breaking into Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base to protest nuclear weapons in 2018. A third activist was sentenced this summer to time served and four more are awaiting sentencing.

Three years after the airport closed, the City of St. Marys is seeking requests for proposals to redevelop the remaining 220 acres. An aquaponics farm is planned for the other roughly 160 acres.

Church buys Cabin Bluff as retreat center

The Nature Conservancy recently sold a portion of the Cabin Bluff property at Harrietts Bluff to a mega-church in Jacksonville, Florida, for $12.75 million.  Church of Eleven22 purchased 3.2 acres of the 11,000-acre property and plans to use the land as a retreat center.

Advance voting has robust start

If early voting and absentee ballots are any indication, Camden County is on track to have a record-breaking election cycle.  In-person early voting locations opened in two locations on Tuesday and there were lines out of the door at both for most of the day.

Arson displaces Kingsland family

Jennifer Trimble and her family were asleep early Friday morning when someone broke into their house and started a fire that has left their Kingsland home uninhabitable.
