World War II vet turns 100

Sande Ryysylainen hoped to live to be 79 years old. Born in 1921, she turned 79 the second day of the new millennium. It seemed like a good goal, then she over shot it by 21 years to turn 100 this month.

Remembering the Thiokol explosion 50 years later

The community will gather on Wednesday, Feb. 3 to remember the men and women who were lost 50 years ago when the Thiokol munitions plant in rural Camden exploded, causing the worst industrial disaster the area has ever seen.

St Marys council names appointments

St. Marys City Council gained a new council member and handled a slate of annual business at its first meeting of the new year last week. Lisa James, who won her seat in the Jan. 5 runoff, took the oath of office for council Post 6 during the virtual meeting.

Health department shifts focus to vaccines

The health department will no longer offer free COVID-19 testing in Camden County after Feb. 1 while staff focus on administering the vaccine and providing essential services. Testing will still be available by appointment only in Glynn County.

COVID vaccine delivery ramping up in Camden

A community-wide partnership dubbed Operation Rampart has successfully administered thousands of vaccines to Camden County citizens in recent days as several more COVID-related deaths were reported regionally this week.

County considers major property renovation

Camden County will be applying for a $3.3 million grant to improve a piece of property it purchased in 2018 as an investment.  The office building, warehouse and parking lot off Gross Road formerly was occupied by Georgia Power Company.

Health district pauses vaccine appointments

The Camden County Health Department made appointments last Thursday for nearly 400 people to get the COVID-19 vaccine on the first day that appointments opened up.
