Members of the Boy Scout Troop and the all-girl Troop 152 attend summer camp in June at Camp Shands near Melrose. They stayed in the tree houses. While practicing social distancing, scouts were able to attend classes and enjoy the outdoors. Scouts completed 38 badges and earned two awards and four scouts achieved ranks. Scout Master William Anno and Amanda Sridasome attended with the scouts. They included Miley Meredith, Avery Meredith, Xavier Gallagher, Christina Scheider and Caitlyn Scheider.

Children ages 7-12 hone their basketball drills as part of the Camp Saunders activities hosted by Hilliard Middle-Senior High School Coach Myron Saunders and the Class 1A state runner-up Flashes boys basketball team in the gym July 15. Forty-four kids participated in the four-day camp, learning the proper way to dribble the ball, defensive tactics and how to hone their skills at the basket. The campers received participation certificates at the conclusion of the camp.

The COVID-19 numbers for Nassau County

Tuesday, July 21: Two more deaths were added Tuesday to a grim list of novel coronavirus-related statistics issued daily by the Nassau County Emergency Management Department. The official death count is now up to five and 773 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.

NCSB to vote Thursday on Aug. 24 school start

The Nassau County School Board will vote Thursday on a revised school calendar that pushes the opening day of classes back two weeks from Aug. 10 to Aug. 24 in order to allow the district more time to work on its plan to resume classes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Fire Watch Council asks for funds to help stop suicides

The July 15 meeting of the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners included information from the Fire Watch Council, an organization formed “to coordinate regional efforts to reduce military veteran suicides in Northeast Florida.” A request for funding was made in the amount of $25,000.

Martin wants more oversight of county manager

John Martin believes there has not been enough transparency and oversight on the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners and is running for the District 1 seat in order to change that. “I can’t tell you I know everything a county commissioner does because that would be a lie,” Martin said.

266-acre development OK’d for golf property

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners has unanimously approved the application for a new Planned Unit Development on 265.65 acres on the west side of Nassau County. The property currently holds the Deerfield Lakes 18-hole golf course and country club.
