No deal! City, OHPA appear headed to court

A seven-hour mediation session between the city of Fernandina Beach and the Ocean Highway and Port Authority failed to produce results Wednesday, so the two sides appear to be headed to court over OHPA’s refusal to continue paying the city a $50,000 annual Payment In Lieu Of Taxes.

COVID-19 cases are increasing

Dr. Eugenia Ngo-Seidel, the head of the county’s health department, told the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners Wednesday that there has been a significant increase in the cases of COVID-19 in the county, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus.

Southeast Atlantic fishermen were able to harvest red snapper over the weekend, with one more day available — Friday.

You can see it for miles, peeking above the treetops. It’s the newest attraction in town, but no, it’s not a Ferris wheel – it’s the VB-10,000 – and it’s docked at the Port of Fernandina.

School board hears draft plan to reopen

The Nassau County School Board is finalizing its plan to have students taught five days a week this school year after the Florida Department of Education announced July 6 that schools will be back in session beginning in August, despite a worsening coronavirus pandemic.
