Burns analyzing plan for schools to start up in August

Superintendent Dr. Kathy Burns told the Nassau County School Board on Thursday that she’s analyzing a Florida Department of Education plan to have students return to school campuses in August for the 2020-21 term.

City Charter review is done

The Fernandina Beach Charter Review Committee could not come to an agreement Monday night regarding an initiative that would have enabled voters to add items to City Commission agendas and repeal certain ordinances. The CRC’s 3-3 vote killed the initiative for lack of a majority.

School board won’t ask for more taxes

The Nassau County School Board indicated during a June 4 workshop, that it will not move forward with a referendum asking property owners to pay more taxes in order to fund teacher salaries and security measures in the district’s schools. “I brought this ballot initiative to the board.

Free COVID-19 tests offered

The director of the county’s department of health told the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners Wednesday that the number of officially counted positive cases of COVID-19 virus in the county had risen to 76 residents and seven non-residents as of Tuesday morning.

Rally, march to be held on Saturday

Just as protests and rallies against police brutality and racism are taking place around the country and the world, people are continuing to gather in Fernandina Beach. Organizers expect 500 people to show up for a peaceful rally and march planned for Saturday.
Sunday is Flag Day. On Flag Day, the Blank Check Society, VFW Post 10095 and American Legion Post 401 members will gather at the Callahan Speedway at 7:30 p.m. to proudly retire numerous U.S. flags. The community is encouraged to attend this ceremony, and to bring any U.S. flag that is no longer serviceable for retirement.

Library offers curbside pickup

The Nassau County Public Library branches remain closed, but curbside pickup at all branches began Monday.  Those services are available by appointment only at the Callahan, Hilliard and Fernandina branches Monday through Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and again from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
