County’s on-beach parking reopens

After approving a consent agenda that included extending the county’s state of emergency for another week, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to lift the county’s temporary on-beach parking ban at 8 a.m. today, but with several important restrictions.

DeSantis’ Phase 2 plan starts today

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that private businesses and public facilities have additional permission to operate closer to normal, as Phase 2 of the state’s plans to recover from the novel coronavirus pandemic began today at 12:01 a.m.

Masked commission meets at turbulent time

In its first meeting at City Hall since March, the Fernandina Beach City Commission conducted its business while wearing masks to avoid spreading any coronavirus they might have, then addressed the social unrest taking place across the country after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn.

Mullet attracting big fish

We live on the backwaters of Langsford Creek and get to watch a lot of changes in the tides, waterfowl and fish migrations. During the winter months, I have watched egrets and white pelicans dipping their bills deep down into the mud and shell bottom, seeking to find crabs and other crustaceans.

County parks open; leagues split on restarting

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order on May 22 to allow for the return of organized youth sports in Florida, and on May 28, Nassau County management met with representatives from organizations via conference call to discuss the reintroduction of the use of sports fields.

Council on Aging assisted via donations

Several local businesses have donated to the Nassau County Council on Aging recently, helping the non-profit assist senior citizens in need. WestRock recently came to the rescue of the NCCOA with 21,000 boxes to package meals for seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Camp Sorensen in Hilliard will allow 1,500 at-risk youth to participate in camping programs. The site will also offer programming related to leadership, diversity, athletics and team building via community partnerships.

Campaign launches to open Nassau-based camp

The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches embarked on a $3.7 million campaign to renovate and open Camp Sorensen in Nassau County in order to provide expanded youth camping programs in Northeast Florida.

Tuesday, June 2: Three more cases of positive COVID-19 tests in Nassau County residents were announced Tuesday morning.

County graduations to be livestreamed

Family and friends who cannot be there in person will be able to watch the 2020 Nassau County high school graduation ceremonies on the internet instead, according to Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathy Burns.
