Cumberland Island National Seashore to add 173 acres

The National Park Service was given $8.7 million by Congress to buy the Nature Conservancy’s 173.7 acres of land on Cumberland Island. This item was requested by U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., and U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., as part of the 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Act from December.

2 charged in connection to death

A 31-year-old man from Washington State has been charged with murder, according to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office online jail log. Shane Douglas White, 31, of Bremerton, Wash., was booked at 9:54 p.m. Thursday, March 2, and charged with murder and aggravated assault.

The St. Marys City Council held a long, eventful, and well-attended meeting Monday. Council appointed James Galloway as the new police chief, heard good news from the Camden County Joint Development Authority about the St.

New U.S. Attorney to lead Southern District

Jill E. Steinberg was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall administered the oath Feb. 22. President Joe Biden nominated Steinberg to be U.S. Attorney on Oct. 19, and the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination Feb. 16.

Candidates convey differences

Three St. Marys City Council hopefuls faced off in a candidate forum Feb. 23 at Three Rivers Church. Chad Ingram, Jay Moreno and Mike Wilkie are vying for the Post 3 seat that was vacated when Councilman-elect Danny Riggins died.

Charges dropped vs. jailhouse beating victim

The Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office has dropped charges against a 41-year-old Greensboro, N.C., man who was allegedly beaten in the Camden County Jail. According to a warrant dismissal, charges were dropped against Jarrett Jarrod Hobbs.
